Nobby Clarke
Nobby Clarke's working life was as a waterman. He lived near the river, and was famous for his exceptional knowledge of its tides and flows, which led to his being often called on for help In rescuing things that feckless amateur sailors dropped overboard: 'primuses, frying pans, outboard motors, watches, spectacles, binoculars, false teeth'. People too - he retrieved them alive or dead, and often the police called on him to help with searches for bodies.

He kept a tally of the larger items with painted notches on the beams of his boatshed: yellow for outboard motors, blue for live people; red for dead ones (fortunately blue outnumbered red).

People still remember his 'Pedallo', a fun machine he invented for travelling on the river.
